Sebastían Piñera and Guillier to the second Electoral Round

The former head of state, Sebastián Piñera, and the government representative, Alejandro Guillier, will be voting again on December 17 th after any of them obtained a majority of votes in the elections carried out on Sunday.

According to the data from the local electoral system. Sebastian Piñera is the leader of the new center-right Chile Vamos political coalition and Alejandro Guillier who is the representative of the center-left wing Nueva Mayoría party, are leading the list of eight candidates who presented the elections.

Sebastian Piñera, who ruled Chile from 2010 to 2014 and the related surveys showed him as a very likely winner, obtained the 36.64% of the votes while Alejandro Guillier reached the 22.70% of them.

Sanchez and Piñera were also the main winners of the vote overseas which is a modality that is applied for the first time.
According to the BBC network channel, the number of votes obtained by the Frente Amplio party are among the most significant occurrences of that vote process because it is different to the “logical” two-party trend which ruled the elections in Chile since the end of the dictator Augusto Pinochet.

There was a 46% of the population available to vote who attended to the polls, according to the vote-count process and that is to say that less than half of the local electoral role.

It is also important that the vote obtained by the three candidates of the progressive sector named Beatriz Sánchez, Frente Amplio party and Carolina Goic of the Christian Democrat and the progressive Marco Enríquez Ominami.

Regarding the related results, the president Michelle Bachelet called the Chileans to the unity and continuing reinforcing the progressive ideas which has helped to strengthen the nation´s social achievements.

The surprise

The great surprise of the day was the candidate of the Frente Amplio political party, Beatriz Sánchez, who was third with the 20.27% and her followers, who were mostly young people, might decide who could be the new president of Chile.
Beatriz Sánchez represents a political left-wing coalition which is backed by former student leaders since 2017.

The renewal of the Chamber of Deputies and part of the Senate

The entrance of the new Frente Amplio party in the U.S. Congress utterly modified the Chilean political forces. That party would be celebrating the achievement of the first seat in the Senate and its 20 deputies. It was formed as a political coalition of small parties in March of the current year, therefore, this would be its first participation in the elections and is led by the former leaders of the student demonstrations carried out in 2011.

The Democracia Cristiana government´s party had not many votes and the Chile Vamos party increased the number of legislative in both chambers in spite it did not get the absolute majority.

Even though it is true that the Chile Vamos right-wing party was presided over by Sebastián Piñera, it achieved a higher number of representatives for the Congress and it did not reach the absolute majority in any of the two chambers.
The Chile Vamos party achieved 19 out of 43 and 72 out of 155 lawmakers through those results.

The Por todo Chile right-wing party would need to be added a senator and a deputy for that sector, and according to the partial results of the local electoral service, the other half of the Chilean Congress would be assigned to the different left-wing sectors.
