HAVANA, Cuba.- Representatives of social movements taking part in the People’s Summit in Rio de Janeiro, urged US President Barack Obama to free the five Cuban antiterrorists unfairly condemned in that northern country.
In the Call of Rio de Janeiro upon Obama, they ask the head of state to honor his condition as Nobel Peace Prize winner by making use of his constitutional power and release the Cuban heroes Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez.
From Rio de Janeiro, amidst efforts to preserve the environment and life on the planet, we appeal to your sense of justice and humanity and ask you: Free them now!, underlines the Call, the Prensa Latina news agency reported.
Several speakers at the meeting of solidarity with the peoples of Latin America, carried out at Plenary Three of the People’s Summit, demanded the US head of state to put an end to injustice against The Five, and allow them to return to their homeland.
Nicaraguan Father Miguel D´Escoto, former president of the United Nations General Assembly, stated that The Five were incarcerated for opposing terrorism and that they are held precisely by the most terrorist, assassin and criminal empire, in reference to the United States.
