Cienfuegos, Cuba. - The birthrate is growing in Cienfuegos. According to indicators of the Infant-Mother Care Program, by the end of the first quarter of this year, 120 000 children had been born, almost 50% more than the same period of last year.
The infant mortality rate has significantly dropped, with single two deaths of children below one year, for a rate of 1, 7 per every thousand born alive. Compared to 2011, it has dropped more than 80 %.
Last year, seven deaths of children below one year had occurred by this time. The indicators take into consideration children older than 28 days, who died by infectious causes.
“Abreus and Cumanayagua are the municipalities that have failed to meet the infant mortality indicator. The rest remains in zero”, explained the Head of the Infant-Mother Care Program, Dr. Lisber Aguilar.
Dr. Aguilar pointed out "In the last five months no child below one year has died at “Dr. Gustavo Aldereguia” Hospital and underweight at birth averaged 3, 7 pounds. Only the municipalities of Lajas, Cruces and Abreus lag behind, whereas the rest has achieved a significant decrease with regard to last year, particularly Cienfuegos, which has dropped more than 50 %.
"The province has met all the indicators and the work of the program is focusing on pediatric care and pregnant mothers. All the maternal homes are working at 100 % of their occupational capacity. We have more than 120 400 women in fertile age of which 31 465 pose reproductive risks." By: Mireya Ojeda (The author's picture)
