Cuba: Actions against Spills of Dangerous Substances

CAMAGUEY, Cuba.- The first stage of research on danger, vulnerability and risks on spills of dangerous substances will end this year in four of the provinces, according to a Project underway in the country.
The territories in which the first initial stage will end are Havana, Matanzas, Cienfuegos and Camaguey, said Sonia Orue Valdes national coordinator of the program underway by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment and other institutions.
The specialists pointed out that the current cycle corresponds in identifying the dangers and the other two to the vulnerability and risks, respectively.
Villa Clara and Santiago de Cuba are also included in the plan while another 7 provinces will be joining in 2013.
She pointed out that the work´s objectives is to establish preventive norms and confrontation regarding possible spill of products like fuel, Clorox, ammonia and liquid gas harmful to people and the environment.
The researcher pointed out that the investigation corresponds to large fuel deposits, pesticides and medications, oil refineries, thermoelectric, and areas that sell liquid gas.
The project includes information like a map with potential points of disasters, severity and confrontation of the impacts, types, among of substances and ways of storing and the determination possible incidents of the affected areas.
Sonia Orue added that the studies of danger, vulnerability and risks in Cuba are inserted in areas like strong winds, intense droughts and flooding due to heavy rains and sea penetration.
