Cuba and Iran exchange on the need for international cooperation against COVID-19

Cuba and Iran exchanged on the need for international cooperation against COVID-19 and the importance of the cessation of unilateral sanctions motivated by political reasons.

This was reported today by the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodriguez, who said that he spoke about it with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif.

"I had a telephone conversation with Iranian Chancellor Mohammad Javad Zarif. We exchanged on the need for cooperation by the international community against COVID19 and the importance of the cessation of unilateral sanctions motivated by political reasons," Rodriguez tweeted.

The United States imposes sanctions on countries such as Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea that remain in midst of a global pandemic of COVID-19, which already amounts about three million people infected in the world.

Numerous world organizations and leaders have recently spoken out about the need for such a hostile policy to stop, at least for the duration of the epidemiological situation.

Last week, for example, more than 70 civil society groups, representing more than 40 million people, called on President Donald Trump to immediately lift sanctions on these countries.

The urgent appeal was released in an open letter sent by the groups to Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin.
