Cuba closed 2019 with 26 athletes qualified in eight disciplines and 34 events for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, with the aim of remaining among the 20 Olympic powers.
Jose Antonio Miranda, director of High Performance of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), told the press.
According to the official, Cuba already has 26 qualified athletes, four in canoeing, one in cycling, two in artistic gymnastics, wrestling and modern pentathlon, five in shooting and 10 in track and field, in a delegation that should reach a number of 115 to 120.
Cuba intends to prioritize athletes in seven sports with the greatest possibility of medals: athletics, canoeing, judo, boxing, wrestling, taekwondo and shooting, Miranda stated.
Compared to the previous edition of Rio de Janeiro 2016 (306), there will be 33 more events, and according to preliminary studies of the possibilities of participation, Cuba will be absent from 177 out of the 339 events scheduled.
