HAVANA, CUBA.- Cuba’s Lizt Alfonso Ballet Company will perform in Qatar on May 6 and 7, with the ballet Fuerza y Compas (Strength and Time), on the occasion of Celebrations in Doha, as the capital of Arab Culture in 2010.
During a press conference, Lizt Alfonso, director of the company made up only by women, announced that the troupe will also perform in April at Havana’s Convention Center and during the Cuban Television Festival at the Karl Marx Theater, on April 23.
She added that “Elementos” will return to the Garcia Lorca Hall of Havana’s Grand Theater during the first half of June, and that on June 23 and 24 the company will dance during the end-of- term gala of vocational workshops, also at the Karl Marx.
For July, she announced a tour of Martinica on the occasion of that island’s national celebrations, where the company’s dancers will perform Fuerza y Compas, sharing the stage with a group of guest artists.
The company’s director spoke about its recent tour of Canada, during which it made 24 presentations in 23 cities, with the pieces Fuerza y Compas, Elementos and Tablao, all of which got good reviews.
She explained that this is the fourth time the company visits Canada, where it obtained its first great success in 2007 with the premiere of the piece “Vida” (Life), at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theater, where it ran for one month. In early 2008 it travelled to that nation with the ballet Fuerza y Compas, and at the end of that same year the company was especially invited to participate in the International Conference on Stage Arts, held in Montreal.
One of the troupe’s greatest wishes, she said, is to carry out a tour of Cuba, taking into account the interest it arouses in ballet lovers throughout the country.
