LAS TUNAS, Cuba. - Cuban authorities are determined to strengthen a nationwide program to eliminate ozone-depleting substances by modifying or replacing equipments using those gases.

The theme was discussed during a national meeting of ozone specialists in this city which generated commitments for the country to continue to comply with the Protocol of Montreal, signed in 1985.

During the meeting, participants from different Cuban provinces insisted on the need to further work on the detection and diagnosis of cooling equipments to determine what type of gases they use and if it is possible to evacuate them.

The debate focused on the importance of reducing and eliminating, in particular in commercial refrigerating systems, ozone-depleting substances by replacing R-12 and R-502 refrigerants with others that are very low or non-harming.

In addition to contributing to preserving the ozone layer, it will guarantee a better technical performance of the refurbished equipment, experts agreed.

To continue reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, efficient cooling machines will be used instead of chillers that use the harmful Freon 11.

This project is already underway in provincial hospital of Guantanamo, and in the municipalities of Contramaestre, in Santiago de Cuba, and Nuevitas,in Camaguey.
