Cuba to attend Online World Chess Olympiad

Cuba officially announced its participation in the Online World Chess Olympiad, which will have its initial round next July 22.

According to JIT website, only two players have secured a spot in the Cuban team, the current national champions Lisandra Ordaz, among women, and Carlos Daniel Albornoz, among men.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE by its French acronym) moved its main events to the online channel due to the worldwide impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, so it launched the call to all federations.

Cuba responded affirmatively to the invitation and the president of the entity in the country, Wilfredo Toledo, confirmed that both figures will lead the local squad.

The FIDE established that each country will have a unique team, and that it must include a man and a woman under the age of 20, as well as a minimum of two women per nation.

The teams will have a captain-coach and as usual they will have a total of six players to have as substitutes or reserves.
