HAVANA, Cuba.- Cuban meteorologists will contribute with Nicaragua in the creation of its own climate forecast model, as announced by retired Colonel Jorge Castro, director of the National Institute for Territorial Studies (INETER).
Doctors Abel Centella and Arnoldo Bezanilla, of the Cuban Meteorology Institute (INSMET), will arrive in Managua on Monday to train Nicaraguan colleagues working on more effective forecasts, the Prensa Latina news agency reported.
According to the INETER, Centella and Bezanilla, specialists in Climate Models and Climate Changes, will carry out, along with the Nicaraguans, exercises aimed at defining immediate scenes, the www.lavozdelsandinismo.com Web site reported.
These exchanges –which will take place until February 25-, will allow for the training of scientists of the Central American nation in the construction of scenes with the PRECIS Regional Climate Model, in order to carry out assessments and forecasts in a more detailed scale.
In statements to the local television channel four, Castro pointed put that his country should get ready for a more active rainy season in 2012, and recalled that Managua, where over 40 percent of the country’s population lives, has a high degree of vulnerability, since only one hour of heavy rain can cause severe damage.
In this regard, the INETER director praised the proven capacity of the National System for the Prevention, Mitigation and Attention of Disasters and of the Civil Defense, as well as of prevention plans in Nicaraguan communities.
