Cuba to rescue its Henequen Industry

The Empresa Natural de Fibras Naturales de Cuba (National Fibers Industry enterprise of Cuba) is currently responsible of rescuing the Henequen industry in order to increase its ropes and strings productions, among other economic areas.

According to Prensa Latina news station, Enrique Almeida who is the director of that institution, expressed that task is based on the desire about making progress in terms of the encouragement of the Henequen production in the western Matanzas province.

In addition, he also pointed out that the related program for the development of this highly- convenient crop includes the sowing of 300 or 400 hectares yearly, without ruling out the related exploration about other fibrous and multipurpose plants such as the local Kenaf and the coconut ones.

There are currently some 809 hectares being used and 542 ones used for the Henequen plant which is a crop that requires a five-year ripening cycle in order to be ready for being cut down.
