Despite the US blockade and COVID-19, Cuban oil company keeps on growing

With a little more than 20, 000 tons of crude oil over its annual plan, the Company of Drilling and Extraction of Oil of the Center (EPEPC by its Spanish acronym), of this locality (western Cuba), keeps a good pace of work, despite the effects of the economic, commercial and financial blockade that the government of the United States imposes on Cuba.

Since last March, when the first positive cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, were reported in the country, the entity has adopted measures to protect its personnel; but they have not stopped producing and the results are favorable, Marcos Antonio Pestana Roque, general director of the EPEPC, told the press.

Out of the more than three-million tons of crude oil produced by Cuba each year, most of it is generated in the region where the EPEPC operates.

The success consists of the interaction between specialists and workers in this economic sector, the training of human resources and the technical level they have reached over the years, Pestana Roque explained.

If the U.S. blockade did not exist, we would be in better situation; many of the inputs needed for the work cannot be brought from the nearby geographical area because they have U.S. components; pipes, pumping units and other essential items must be sought in far-off countries, he added.

The cost of operation would be lower if we could obtain parts and accessories from suppliers in the region such as Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Canada, Brazil and the United States, the director general concluded.
