
The Surgical Society of Ethiopia ( SSETHIO) awarded today the prize of the year to Cuba for its contribution to the development of this specialty in that African country and the work of training local doctors by Cuban specialists.
Dereje Gulilat, head of the SSETHIO, praised in the official ceremony the Cuban medical collaboration all over the world, by means of assistance programs and the allocation of free scholarships to students from different countries, among them Ethiopia, Prensa Latina reported.
Gulilat particularly praised the presence of Cuban doctors and paramedics in different Ethiopian regions during the more than 40 years of relations between the two states.
During the 24th Annual Assembly of the association, he commented that the first surgeons who arrived in various territories of his country were Cubans, and highlighted Cuba's support for the opening of the Faculty of Medicine in Jimma, a city in the regional state of Oromia, in southwestern Ethiopia.
Vilma Thomas, Cuban ambassador in the African nation, thanked for the award on behalf of the Cuban people, government and professionals who have been and still are linked to bilateral cooperation in the medical field.
