
Boxing added four scepters and a silver medal, while shooting contributed one title and another second place to the Cuban medal table yesterday in the 18th Pan American Games taking place until next August 11 in the Peruvian capital.
Lazaro Alvarez, in the 60 kilograms division, Roniel Iglesias (69), Julio César la Cruz (81) and Dainier Pero (+91) all became champions of the Games when defeating Dominicans Leonel de los Santos and Rohan Polanco, Brazilian Keno Machado and Colombian Cristian Salcedo, in that order.
The also Dominican Rodrigo Marte frustrated Cuba´s perfect night when beating Yosvani Veitia (52), who became Pan Am runner-up for the third time.
Cuba´s other crown yesterday came through shooter Jorge F. Alvarez in the 25-meter rapid fire pistol, event where his compatriot Leuris Pupo, London 2012 Olympic monarch, won the silver medal.
The badminton men´s duet made up by Osleni Guerrero and Leodannis Martinez also earned a medal when ranking third after losing the semifinal to Canadians Jason Ho-Shue and Nyl Yakura.
The other best performances of Cuban athletes yesterday were starred by Anisley Garcia and Prisis Leidy Ruiz who finished fifth in the women´s synchronized 3m springboard contest and the quartet of cyclist ranked sixth in the women´s team pursuit.
Meanwhile, in team sports, the handball men´s side lost 25-26 to USA, thus losing the chances of reaching the podium; the men´s volleyball players beat Puerto Rico 3-1 and the men's field hockey squad lost 0-4 to Chile.
