Former Brazilian president thanks solidarity of Cuban doctors

Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff expressed her gratitude to Cuban health professionals who participated in the founding of the “Mais Medicos” program, which brought health care to the most intricate communities in that South American nation.

During her term, from 2011 to 2016, more than 11,000 Cuban doctors gave their solidarity aid on Brazilian soil, helping to eradicate different diseases in the most vulnerable communities.

The aforementioned program was created in 2013 at the initiative of Rousseff, in order to guarantee the presence of national and foreign doctors in Brazil´s poor and remote areas.

In November 2018, the Cuban government announced the forced departure of all its health workers from Brazilian territory due to false accusations launched by the then president of that country, Jair Bolsonaro, who described the collaborators as terrorists or spies of the Cuban "Dictatorship".

As a consequence, millions of Brazilians were left unprotected and without guarantees of medical care, a situation aggravated by the current expansion of the new coronavirus, whose death toll amounts to more than two thousand.

Regarding this, Rousseff expressed that “if the Cuban physicians were still there, Brazil would be in better conditions to face this difficult moment.
