GUANTANAMO, Cuba.- Luis Antonio Torres, first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) in eastern Guantanamo province, highlighted on Thursday the region’s economic and social achievements, during the main rally held in this city on the occasion of the Day of National Rebelliousness.
In the presence of Army General Raul Castro, president of the councils of State and Ministers, Torres referred to the actions carried out in the field of food production and in the health and education sectors, two pillars of the Cuban Revolution’s social policy.
Torres, also a member of the Central Committee of the PCC, made reference to the repair works carried out at hospitals and other health facilities, and to important actions to recover the economic infrastructure and the recreation of the population.
The main rally held on the occasion of 59th anniversary of the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes garrisons began at 7:00 a.m. with the placing of a wreath by the complex of monuments of the Square, named after the mother of all Cubans, Mariana Grajales.
The thousands of Guantanamo residents gathered at the Square represented all Cubans living in the territory and throughout the island, in a ceremony that paid tribute to the heroes and martyrs that carried out the attacks on the aforementioned garrisons on July 26, 1953, actions that paved the way for and sparked off the 1959 Revolution, leading to its triumph on January 1st, 1959.
