The National Wine Festival kicked off on Thursday in the city of Holguin with the participation of some 200 producers from 13 provinces where they will have wine samples to be evaluated by an expert committee.
The Vice President of the Bayado Club in Holguin, Ivette Pupo told ACN that the event has a competitive character and the main categories are dry, semi-dry, sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling and the best wine cellars of each territory have already been selected.
Among the provinces that will be present are Pinar del Rio, Havana, Villa Clara, Ciego de Avila, Camaguey, Santiago de Cuba, Guantanamo, Granma and Holguin, said Pupo.
The event will also be a space to exchange experiences between wine producers and initiatives, among them, the production of medicinal liquor, using cherry, ginger and majagua.
The festival, will run until Saturday and will include collateral activities like tours to sites of social and cultural interests and a tribute to Calixto Garcia Iniguez, independence leader from Holguin known in Cuba as the General of the Three Wars.
La Periquera Provincial Museum and the Expo Holguin Fair Hall are the main venues of the encounter, which will also include talks and workshops dedicated in continuing the tradition inherited from Spain in the 19 th century.
The Bayado Club was founded in 1994 and is distinguished for the use of species and non-conventional tropical fruits, among them pepper, papaya, orange, eggplant and tamarindo for the production of wine.
