HAVANA, Cuba. - Spanish journalist and writer Ignacio Ramonet received on Friday the Honoris Causa Doctorate in Communication Sciences of the University of Havana during a ceremony held at the Main Hall of this higher education center with the presence of Cuban Culture Minister Abel Prieto.

Ramonet, author of the book “Cien horas con Fidel” (One Hundred Hours with Fidel), received the award from the hands of Gustavo Cobreiro, Rector of the University of Havana.

Cobreiro affirmed that the Spanish intellectual has continuously denounced the mechanisms of world domination of the transnational media powers and their impact on the identity of the peoples.

He added that Ramonet has also encouraged the emergence of a political and civic thinking of great transcendence to bring together the forces that oppose imperialism and unipolar hegemony, under the premise that a better world is possible.

The Rector of the University of Havana referred to the close ties of the Spanish intellectual with Cuba and his significant contribution to higher education in the Caribbean nation.

For his part, Ramonet expressed his gratitude for the award and he referred to the current crisis of communication with the expansion of the internet, where information is often produced and reproduced through reiteration and without veracity.

Ignacio Ramonet was the editor-in-chief of ‘Le Monde Diplomatique’ from 1991 until March 2008.
