International workshop on nuclear applications to start today in Havana

An International Workshop on Advanced Nuclear Applications kicked off today at the Palacio Cueto Hotel, in Old Havana, dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the founding of the Cuban capital, next November 16.

Cuban and foreign experts will address, until next Friday, topics about the use of nuclear applications in health, agriculture, the environment, industry and their contribution to the conservation of heritage cities.

The Cuban Network of Nuclear Communicators (REDNUC) also reported that the agenda includes an event around leadership, to be attended by 30 young people from the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The latter is organized by the Regional Nuclear Cooperation Agreement for the Promotion of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARCAL), under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

For a period of two years, Cuba assumed the presidency of ARCAL last May, at the 20th meeting of the Technical Coordination Body of this organization, which met from 20 to 24 of that month in Varadero, Cuba.

ARCAL emerged in 1984 from an initiative of 10 countries, presented to the IAEA, based in Vienna, Austria.
