Letīs talk about Dementia, new PAHO Regional Campaign

A regional campaign aimed at getting people to know and talk more about Alzheimer's and other dementias was presented today by PAHO, on occasion of the world month of this disease, suffered by 10 million people in the continent.

Let's talk about dementia is the name of the communication initiative, based on the understanding that talking about dementia helps fight stigma, normalizes language and encourages people to discover more about the disease and to seek help, advice and support, highlights the digital site of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

The lack of knowledge about dementia and how an affected person could behave has contributed to stigma, said Carissa F. Etienne, director of that United Nations entity.

He also pointed out that the campaign, supported by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), will encourage conversations everywhere, since talking is the first step towards raising awareness, understanding and overcoming barriers that hinder access to diagnosis and care.

For Paola Barbarino, ADI specialist, Dementia is one of the most important global health and social care crises in the 21st century, with someone developing it every three seconds.

She assured that, the stigma surrounding it, and the lack of available treatment, means that people take time to talk about this and seek advice and support. World Alzheimer's Month is an international campaign to raise awareness and challenge stigma around dementia every September.

According to statistics from the organization, the prevalence of dementia worldwide is increasing exponentially. It is estimated that the number of people living with dementia will triple, from the current 50 million to 152 million by mid-century.
