Through time, the mathematics has been for many students a real difficult subject; however, there are others who consider it as a source of inspiration and enjoyment given its attractive characteristic and usefulness that is used in many sectors of the human society. The mathematics career, which was created in 1962 as well as the local Universitary Reform, is turning five decades during the current year.
Mathematician Vivian Sistach Vega, chief of the Applied Mathematics department that belongs to the University of Havana city, described as a wonderful one the aforementioned science.
Vivian Sistach Vega pointed out that it is even more interesting when is found that the mathematics as such is present in all the human life´s activities as well as its many ways of applications given that it is not used to deliver lessons only.
´The mathematics enables to solve problems through mathematical models given it is the type of subject that even though it seems to be really abstract. It is not at all taking into account that one can use it in terms of a problem and its solution in relation to the industrial production and industrial processes, public health and social researches as part of the natural sciences.´ Vivian Sistach stated.
Vivian Sistach, who adviced the young students not to feel afraid of mathematics and to face it optimistically, reiterated: ´The mathematics subject, like other careers that are studied in the Havana´s University, requires a lot of time for its study given that it would never be enough to master it through mere lessons given by its professors, especially if the students as such has not a previous and wide mathematical knowledge. However, that does not constitutes a limiting factor for students given that the mathematics only needs extra hours for its properly study through books and notes during the students ´spare time. Therefore, the mathematics is not at all a subject devised for geniuses only; on the contrary, it is for common students who have the determination to really studying intensively.´
Vivian Sistach developed some projects of researches: One of them in relation to the Bio-mathematics that was also carried out by other institutions, especially in relation to the study of infectious diseases like in the case of the Dengue disease, specifically.
´Another multidisciplinary research that received the main prize from the local Ministry of Agriculture was the prediction and Citrus Production, especially in the cases ofthe grapefruit and orange fruits in which is also taken into account the influence of the weather and the section that I had to do was precisely the Mathematical models in relation to the behavior and tendency as part of a future and reliable prediction, thus being important the commitment that is part of the harvest process which is aimed at achieving a proper production and exportation.´ Vivian Sistach commented.
There are mathematicians who express their deep preference for the mathematics subject by describing it or at least some of its aspects as beautiful ones. Moreover, the mathematics is also sometimes regarded as a kind of art or as a recreational activity at least. It is common then its comparison with poetry and music. Bertrand Russellertrand Russell, who was a British mathematician and philosopher, expressed the beauty of mathematics through these words:
´The mathematics has not only the truth as such but also the supreme beauty that is a cold and austere beauty which is also found in a sculpture, for instance. It has not our weak nature let alone the magnificent ornaments that are found in painting of music; however, it is pure and has the type of true perfection which are present in the best arts only. The true spirit of delight, exaltation and the fact that it is bigger that the man as such constitutes the criterion by which is valued its highest excellence that can be found in both the mathematics subject and in the poetry.´ By Teresa Valenzuela
