Havana, Cuba.- Prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso received on Tuesday -at the San Carlos Theater of the Italian city of Naples- a special tribute on the occasion of her 90th birthday and for her significant career in the field of dance.
Alonso and Cuba’s National Ballet Company (BNC), of which she’s the director, were warmly welcomed in their debut in this theater, the Prensa Latina news agency reported.
Particular impact had the choreography "Elegía por un joven", created by this artist to pay tribute to young Italian Fabio di Celmo, the victim of a terrorist act perpetrated in Havana in 1997, the presentation of which was attended by his father, Giustino, and by Carina Soto, Cuba’s ambassador to Rome.
The program included "The Sylphs" and "Abandoned Dido", recreated by the director of the BNC from the original ballet by Gasparo Angiolini –also the author of the script and the music-, which she gave a contemporary touch without affecting the forms of expression of the time (17th century).
Shining in the main roles were dancers Anette Delgado, Viengsay Valdes, Janela Piñera, Elier Bourzac, Alejandro Virreyes and Jose Losada, accompanied by soloists and the corps de ballet.
The ballet season will end on Wednesday at the aforementioned theater.
