HOLGUIN, Cuba.- Over one million surgeries were carried out in Cuba in 2011, which undoubtedly is an achievement of the Cuban health sector, said Public Health minister Roberto Morales in this eastern city.
During a meeting to evaluate the implementation of the Communist Party guidelines in the local health sector, Morales said that 68 percent of those medical proceedings were major surgeries.
The large number of operations favors efforts to shorten the list of patients waiting for these proceedings, he said.
The minister referred to the positive performance of the child-mother health program this year, which will allow the country to report the lowest infant mortality rate ever this year.
The province of Holguin alone registered an infant mortality rate of 2.7 deaths in every 1000 live births which, —he said—no other region of the world has achieved.
The death of children below one year also decreased in the country if compared to same period of 2011.
The meeting, attended by local government authorities, revealed the first results of the reorganization process of the Cuban health sector, marked by higher efficiency and quality.
