St. Lucia and other Eastern Caribbean nations to apply Cuban medicine to fight COVID 19

Dr. Didacus Jules, director general of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), reported on Wednesday at a press conference the beginning of the use of Interferon alpha 2B in St. Lucia and other countries in that Caribbean region.

In this regard, Jules explained that a 9,000 unit shipment of the drug is already in St. Lucia and will be delivered for application in the fight against COVID-19.

The recombinant human Interferon alpha 2B was developed in 1986 by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB by its Spanish acronym) in Havana and has benefited thousands of Cuban patients since its introduction more than three decades ago in the national health system.

This product has shown its efficacy and safety in the therapy of viral diseases, such as Hepatitis B and C, Herpes zoster, HIV-AIDS and Dengue, since it has the property of obstructing viral multiplication inside the cells, in addition to being used in the treatment of different types of carcinomas.

Its original choice by the Chinese medical authorities to use it against the novel coronavirus is due to the fact that these viruses generally reduce the natural production of interferon in the human body and the Cuban drug is capable of making up for this deficiency, strengthening the immune system of patients suffering from this respiratory ailment.
