The Great theater of Havana city is featured by two main aspects: It is the most ancient theater institution still in use in Latin America, as it was inaugurated on February 18th, 1838, and it has had the new name of the prima ballerina of Cuba, Alicia Alonso.

The audience´s euphoric claps have been experienced there for three different centuries and its praises took place many times due to Alicia Alonso´s presence on the stage. However, that theater and her has signed a symbolic pact for the posterity.

There are really few people in the world who have had the privilege to enjoy in their lives to see homages that have become into statutes and appointments related to her work. There are few chosen ones, the lucky ones. However, Alicia Alonso really deserves all as she devoted her life to the Cuban art, defended her principles by putting even her wide career at risk and she always knew how to be loyal to her people and Cuba, where she preferred to work for its culture and created a Ballet school to leave the most strict and enjoyable dance to all of us.

This is the reason, the local audience enjoyed a statue about Alicia Alonso which will be placed in that building´s lobby right before all the rounds of applauses which could be listened at the Great Theater of Havana city.

Before it and while that artistic creation was a sketch made of clay, there had been some members of the National Ballet of Cuba who had offered their opinion about it: “It was an occasion when we could still correct some details.” The sculptor said in an interview.

It was in that way and as a group collection, that pice of art that is 2 meters tall and 40 centimeters tall and signed by José Villa Soberón and Grabiel Cisneros was created. The distinguished slenderness of the Alicia Alonso statue on the play entitled´ Giselle´ has been perpetuated in bronze.

“While unveiling the piece of work made by the expert José Villa Soberón with which he got into the outstanding level of his artistic creation, it was shown a really difficult artistic work.” The historian of Havana city, Eusebio Leal Spengler, said on its inauguration.

“Alicia approached it to touch it and caressing it with her hands. She identified her enthusiastic blood of her soul in that work made of a cold bronze. She could see it through her feelings, and as her distinguished friend Dulce María Loynaz used to say:

“It always accompany those ones who have seen her and even in the shade, they still discover the different features, colors and the shine of things.”
