The contamination of the Cienfuegos’ bay is practically extinguished

Other new victory in the bay is reached by the people from Cienfuegos. It is only left the one percent of the contamination of the oily waters caused by the spilling of the hydrocarbon collection pools from the Petroleum Refinery, when the intensives rains of the Albert subtropical storm occurred.

It is a result of the integrated work of the Party and the Government, with the mobilization of the organizations, enterprises, labor unions, youths and the people to achieve to have it almost totally clean after being affected between the 60 and 70 percent, it is recognized by Lidia Esther Brunet Nodarse, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and First Secretary in the province.

She says “I recognize the sacrifice and the work developed here in the middle of the bay in order to clean it. I ask to the people from Cienfuegos to enjoy with peace this stage of the summer together with the family, their friends and to spend happy these months of July and August”.

Mayrelis Pernía Cordero, President of the Popular Power Assembly also participate in the supervision travel by the bay, where Irenaldo Pérez Cardoso, the Refinery Engineering Services Manager, refers to an almost a month of non-interrupted labor to achieve the cleaning, with the use of a very expensive technologic equipment.

He assures that “practically the part of a fine job is remaining to finish, and they have being working around 240 or 250 persons at full time in the recovery of the bay, that covered the daily mobilization towards the different contaminated places”.

Ivan Figueroa, Chief of the CITMA Environmental Supervision Unity evaluates the decrease of the visual impact to the superficial waters of the North nodule and the center of the bay, as well as the social one in El Perché fishermen community and the one linked to the flora and fauna.

He announces that in the first ten days of July the Environmental Studies Center will realize a monitoring: “From there we could be saying in a middle and large period the results about the sediment. The impact was reduced to zero in the areas of bath, ready for the summer and the vessels”.
There are just reported small recaptures of hydrocarbon in the Calicito inlet, in Jucaral and Punta Ladrillo.

Others areas evaluate with the Sea Researches Institute of the Science, Technology and Environment Ministry to apply a Cuban product that contributes to the petroleum degradation.

He affirms “we are preparing a concentrate of these microorganisms, and they are applied by spraying. They help to degrade that petroleum and to reduce the impact directly over the roots of the mangrove and some areas where it is”.
