The People’s Summit: under way in Brazil

The People’s Summit began on Friday, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, its sessions on the planet’s environmental, economic and social deterioration.
Some 30,000 delegates attend the meeting, the Latina news agency reported, adding that the denunciation of the origins of the current social and environmental crisis and their opposition to the concept of green economy –a false solution, according to one of the organizers, Ivo Lesbaupin- will be among the forum’s main topics.
The Flamengo Park, in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro, is the venue of the over 600 events scheduled for the social meeting, according to the same source.
About 200 organizations of the world’s civil society are represented, among which the movements of indigenous peoples, women, black people, environmentalists and religious people, among others, stand out.
According to the program, debates, meetings, concerts and demonstrations have also been scheduled, all of them under the slogan “At Rio+20 for Social and Environmental Justice”.
An analysis of the activities and actions carried out since the Earth Summit, held in that same city two decades ago, in addition to the preparation of an agenda of combat for the future, have been scheduled for the last day of the meeting –June 23.
