The gold medals of Ismael Borrero and Gabriel Rosillo, in the Greco-Roman wrestling, and that of Juan Miguel Echevarria, in the men´s long jump, stood out yesterday for Cuba in the 18th Pan American Games of Lima 2019.
Borrero, Olympic and world champion, didn´t even allow a single point to the three rivals he faced in 67 kilograms division, while Rosillo (97 kg) scored 22 and only received 2.
The other title of the day for Cuba came through Echevarria, who won with a jump of 8.27 meters.
Also in athletics, Rose Mary Almanza was runner-up in the women´s 800 meters with time of 2: 01.64 minutes, while Leonel Suarez ranked fifth in the decathlon and Adriana Rodriguez finished second in the first day of the heptathlon.
The men´s Greco-Roman wrestling team also contributed bronze medals through Yosvanys Peña (77), Daniel Gregorich (87) and Luis Orta (60).
Harold Rodríguez (men´s sabre) also earned a bronze medal after losing 7-15 in semifinals to Argentine Pascual Maria Di Tella and swimmer Elisbet Gamez finished fifth in the women´s 200 meters freestyle event.
In road cycling, Heidy Praderas and Arlenis Sierra ranked fourth and eighth respectively in the women´s time-trial race, while Pedro Portuondo finished twelfth in the same contest but in the men´s event.
Meanwhile, Cubans advanced to the finals in the Basque pelota competition events of men´s fronton singles and the women´s frontenis doubles; in addition to five crews in the rowing contest.
Cuba closed fifth yesterday in the standings, with 18 gold, 13 silver and 17 bronze medals, with only four days left to the closing of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
