TS Michael to become a hurricane over Cuban westernmost area

Tropical Storm Michael during the early morning has continued to gain in organization and intensity, the Institute of Meteorology reported this Monday in its tropical hurricane warning No. 6.

TS Michale now has sustained maximum winds of up to 110 kilometers per hour, with higher gusts and its central pressure has decreased to 983 hectoPascal, making it very close to the hurricane category.

At six o'clock in the morning today, Michael's center was estimated at 20.7 degrees North latitude and 85.5 degrees West longitude, position that situates it approximately 140 kilometers to the south-southwest of San Antonio cape, Cuba´s westernmost point.

Tropical Storm Michael continues to move in a direction close to Pinar del Río, increasing its translation speed which is now 11 kilometres per hour.

During the next 12 to 24 hours Michael will continue his movement close to the north, gradually increasing its travel speed and gaining more in organization and intensity, to become a hurricane before noon.

Michael will cross during the afternoon the Yucatan canal, very close to the San Antonio Cape, the western end of Pinar del Río, entering into the waters of the southeastern Gulf of Mexico during the night.

The rains associated with this tropical storm will affect half of the population of Cuba, where they will be strong and intense in some localities, mainly in Pinar del Río, Artemisa and Isla de la Juventud. They severe local storms occur in some parts of the western part of the country during the passage of the rain bands.

The winds in Pinar del Río and the Isle of Youth will reach the force tropical storm from the end of the morning, increasing during the day, and in the afternoon, until reaching sustained speeds between 65 and 80 kilometresper hour, with gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour.

In the peninsula of Guanahacabibes, western end of Pinar del Rio, winds can reach hurricane strength in gusts from noon. In the rest of the winds between 35 and 50 kilometres per hour will blow, with gusts of wind in areas of showers and thunderstorms.

The next tropical hurricane warning will be issued at nine o'clock in the morning
