UNESCO recognizes unjustified damage of US blockade against Cuba

The economic, commercial and financial blockade applied by the U.S. government for almost six decades against Cuba has caused unjustified damage to its people and hinders its economic development, UNESCO denounces.

The report of the institution, addressed to the Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, reflects in a report the assessment of countries and institutions on the blockade imposed against the Caribbean island, regarding the vote today in the UN General Assembly on the draft resolution 73/8, which demands an end to the unilateral and extraterritorial measure, Prensa Latina reported.

According to UNESCO, the blockade affects education, science and culture in Cuba, precisely the working fields of the UN specialized agency.

Concerning education, it obstructs the upgrading of the national teaching program and the university system by preventing Cuba's access to advanced technology and equipment, as well as hindering free academic exchange and co-operation between the two countries in the scientific sector.

The culture decreases its activity in fields such as the diffusion and development of the artistic talent of the island, in the acquisition of bibliography as well as in the telecommunications sector and the use of Internet, the document stated.

UNESCO also includes in its report to the Secretary General, the financial persecution within the framework of the Washington blockade, and its particular consequence in the cultural field and in its functioning.

Such a scenario limits the activities of its staff in Cuba, both in private matters and in the aspects of their work, forcing the search for alternatives at an additional cost.
