HAVANA, Cuba. - Yumari Gonzalez heads the roster that will represent Cuba at the
World Track Cycling Championships, which will be held in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, to run from March 24 through the 28.
The scratch World champion in 2007 and 2009 will travel with Lisandra Guerra, gold medallist in 2008 in the 500 meter event, and Delilah Rodriguez, medallist at the World Cup, the three of them trying to maintain the top positions conquered by the Island in international competitions.
Hector Marcos, head coach of the Cuban Federation of the sport told ACN news agency that Gonzalez will compete in omnium, and event consisting of five events: 200 meters launched, scratch (five kilometers), individual pursuit (two), points race (10) and 500 meters, and to finally select the best athlete.
Mark ratified Yumari´s great motivation for this modality, included in the 2012
London Olympic schedule, but she will also defend her world crown in scratch.
Experts say that the sprinter Lisandra should address the 500 meters, speed and keirin, and Delilah, the individual pursuit and points race.
Cuba qualified to compete in all men’s and women’s events, but since it didn’t participate in the four phases of the world cup, it limited to three the number of athletes who will perform at the Ballerup Super Arena velodrome, a 250 meters track made of Siberian pine.
Last year, Cuba won gold medals and silver through Yumari in scratch and the race by points, while Guerra was seventh in the 500 meters and keirin events, and Delilah finished in the same position in the emerging omnium test.
