{"id":1027,"date":"2023-03-01T21:00:36","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T02:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/?p=1027"},"modified":"2023-03-01T21:00:51","modified_gmt":"2023-03-02T02:00:51","slug":"pakistan-launches-trafficking-probe-after-refugee-boat-tragedy-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/pakistan-launches-trafficking-probe-after-refugee-boat-tragedy-2-01032023\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan launches trafficking probe after refugee boat tragedy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Pakistani authorities have launched an investigation to find alleged traffickers after a boat carrying nearly 200 people \u2013 20 of them Pakistanis \u2013 drowned near the southern Italian coast, killing at least 63.&nbsp; &nbsp;Sixteen Pakistanis survived the shipwreck, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tweeted on Monday, while four others are still missing. &nbsp;A search operation is continuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, an official of Pakistan\u2019s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) told Al Jazeera there had been two incidents of Pakistani refugees drowning in recent weeks, the other being off Libya\u2019s coast nearly a week ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FIA official, on condition of anonymity, said the agency had formed several teams of investigators following the incidents and expected to arrest some suspected traffickers. &nbsp;\u201cWe have met some families and conducted our own investigation into criminal elements involved in trafficking, and will hopefully make some arrests soon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least 63 people, including 12 children, died after the wooden boat that left Turkey last week crashed early on Sunday against rocks near Steccato di Cutro, a resort on the eastern coast of Italy\u2019s Calabria region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a tweet on Monday, Pakistan\u2019s foreign ministry said their embassy official in Italy met the 16 Pakistanis rescued from the capsized vessel. &nbsp;\u201cThey seemed [to be] in good physical condition. According to them, there were 20 Pakistanis on the ship. &nbsp;Embassy is in close contact with Italian authorities to verify status of the four missing Pakistanis,\u201d said the tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muhammed Waseem, a resident of Gujar Khan, a small city nearly 60km (37 miles) from the capital, Islamabad, told Al Jazeera his nephew Asad Naeem was among the Pakistanis who drowned in the Libya incident. &nbsp;\u201cWe submitted an application to the foreign office on Monday but so far have not heard back anything from the officials,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waseem said the family last heard from his nephew on February 22 when he boarded a ship in Libya bound for Italy. &nbsp;\u201cHe called us and said he has boarded a big ship and there is nothing to worry about.
