The First Chamber of Brazil\u2019s Supreme Federal Court (STF) unanimously rejected on Thursday the request for house arrest for former President Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for leading a 2022 coup attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The full court upheld the decision of Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the rapporteur for the case, who on March 2nd kept Bolsonaro detained at the 19th Battalion of the Military Police of the Federal District, also known as Papudinha, in Bras\u00edlia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The decision upholds a ruling by Judge Moraes, who determined that there were no grounds to justify transferring the former Brazilian president to house arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Moraes, the detention center guarantees the necessary healthcare, and he cited, in rejecting the request, Bolsonaro\u2019s attempted violation of his electronic ankle monitor last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The former president\u2019s defense team had filed the request on February 11, based on a medical report, arguing that the conversion of his sentence was humanitarian in nature and supported by previous court jurisprudence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although the petition mentioned a Federal Police report suggesting an evaluation of Jair Bolsonaro\u2019s neurological symptoms, the same document ruled out the need for hospitalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In issuing his ruling, Moraes emphasized Bolsonaro\u2019s frequent visits from allies, which he argued demonstrated intense political activity, and his physical and mental health was compatible with the current prison regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
