Various figures in Panamanian politics signed an open letter addressed to the United States government demanding an end to the blockade that has affected Cubans for more than sixty years. Under the slogan \u201cCuba is not alone: \u200b\u200ba call for solidarity from Panama,\u201d the signatories emphasize that they cannot remain indifferent to the policies that seek to suffocate the people of the Caribbean island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt a time when international pressure against Cuba is intensifying, it is essential to raise our voices based on our own history. Panamanians, marked by decades of struggle for the liberation and recovery of the Canal Zone, deeply understand what it means to confront interference and defend sovereignty,\u201d the letter reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The document, endorsed by former historical leaders of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) such as Mitchel Doens, Pedro Miguel Gonz\u00e1lez, H\u00e9ctor Alem\u00e1n, and El\u00edas R\u00edos, criticizes the continuation of the restrictive measures imposed during the Donald Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The politicians denounce the use of unfounded arguments to justify new sanctions, such as labeling the Caribbean nation a threat, with the aim of creating destabilizing scenarios in a country that defends its sovereignty. This refers to the executive order signed by US President Donald Trump on January 29 of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this measure, the White House occupant declares a national emergency, considering Cuba an alleged unusual and extraordinary threat\u2014an argument rejected by the Cuban government and people, as well as hundreds of individuals, leaders, and organizations around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump\u2019s order gives Washington carte blanche to impose tariffs on goods from countries that supply oil to Cuba, leading to fuel shortages that exacerbate the impact of the prolonged blockade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The letter signed by the Panamanian politicians also highlights Cuba\u2019s dignity and resilience in the face of decades of sabotage and isolation campaigns, without relinquishing its sovereignty or its national project. \u201cCuba, just 90 miles from U.S. territory, has become a symbol of resistance and dignity for the peoples of the world,\u201d they stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement, also supported by former ambassador Luis G\u00f3mez, recalls that the United Nations General Assembly has repeatedly expressed a global consensus against Washington\u2019s sanctions, in favor of international law and the self-determination of peoples. Along these same lines, they emphasized that \u201cCuba is not alone: \u200b\u200bit has the solidarity of nations around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, the authors of the statement urge Panamanian society to adopt a firm and consistent stance, consistent with its own history of struggle for sovereignty. The call exhorts the rejection of interference and the defense of regional justice, maintaining that the solidarity of nations is fundamental to confronting external pressures that attempt to break the spirit of the people. \u201cBecause when people unite around justice and solidarity, no blockade can break their spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
