The Florencia City Council in Italy has approved a motion in support of Cuba, demanding action from the Cuban government against the intensification of the US economic blockade of the island, according to a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A statement published on the official website of the Florencia City Hall highlights that Resolution 338\/2026, presented to the council by the political party Common Left Project (SPC), expresses solidarity with the Cuban people in the face of the growing threats they face from the U.S. government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Councilman Dmitrij Palagi, spokesperson for SPC, stated in remarks to the media that this initiative reaffirms the majority position of the authorities of this city, the capital of the Tuscany region, against the increased pressure on Cuba exerted by the current administration of President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In that resolution, \u201cthe Italian government and the European Parliament are urged to act firmly against the unilateral measures affecting the Cuban civilian population.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is a political act that continues a long history: that of Florencia, an internationalist city, a city of peace, which recognizes those who have extended a helping hand in the worst of times,\u201d noted Palagi, who recalled that \u201cin 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuba sent medical brigades to Italy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, \u201csome four hundred Cuban doctors are currently working in Calabria, ensuring the operation of emergency rooms and intensive care units,\u201d he emphasized, despite the United States\u2019 efforts to end the presence of the Caribbean nation\u2019s specialists in that southern region of Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The right-wing Italian government, however, \u00a8remains silent while Trump imposes a blockade that deprives millions of people of fuel, medicine, and basic necessities,\u201d without uttering \u201ca single word, not even to recall Cuba\u2019s solidarity with Italy, as a historical and moral imperative,\u201d the councilman emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The approval of this new motion in Florencia follows similar actions in recent cities such as Turin and Cuneo, in the Piedmont region, as well as in Poggibonsi, in Tuscany, and more recently in the Italian capital, Rome, which reaffirm support for the Cuban people in the face of the tightening of US measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Marco Papacci, president of the National Association of Italy-Cuba Friendship (Anaic), emphasized in statements to Prensa Latina that \u201cthese official pronouncements from local government entities are being made throughout Italy, as part of the efforts to increase solidarity with the island.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These initiatives join many others promoted by various organizations, including the \u201cEnergy for Life\u201d campaign, co-sponsored by Anaic, the ARCI Social Promotion Association, the Italian General Confederation of Labor, and the National Association of Italian Partisans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also noteworthy is the European Convoy that departed from Italy for Cuba in mid-March, as well as a national march scheduled for Saturday, April 11, in Rome, organized by Anaic and the Gianni Min\u00e1 Foundation, with the support of dozens of political, social, and labor organizations across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
