Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel Berm\u00fadez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, says that the new economic blockade measures announced by the United States government worsen the already difficult situation facing the country, but strengthen the Cuban people\u2019s determination to defend their country from imperialist aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through his official account on the social media platform X, the president stated: \u201cOur people already know the cruelty behind the actions of the U.S. government and the viciousness with which it is capable of attacking them. They understand, as the rest of the world understands, that this is a unilateral aggression against a nation and a population whose only ambition is to live in peace, masters of their own destiny and without the pernicious interference of U.S. imperialism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe additional economic blockade measures announced today aggravate the already difficult situation facing our country, to the same extent that they strengthen our determination to defend the Homeland, the Revolution and Socialism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cuban president\u2019s statements come after the U.S. Treasury Department added the Cuban entities Gaesa and MoaNickel S.A. to the Specially Designated Nationals List, as the first coercive measure stemming from the executive order signed by Donald Trump on May 1st.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This provision significantly expands sanctions against Cuba, targeting any person or entity, foreign or U.S., operating in strategic sectors of the Cuban economy, including energy, defense, mining, and financial services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sanctions also include extraterritorial measures that allow for the punishment of international banks that facilitate transactions with sanctioned entities, threatening them with the closure of their Wall Street accounts or a ban on operating in dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cuban Foreign Ministry described these measures as an act of ruthless economic aggression that constitutes a collective punishment of a genocidal nature against the Cuban people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodr\u00edguez Parrilla, who on Tuesday called Secretary of State Marco Rubio\u2019s statements denying the existence of an oil blockade while promoting these sanctions \u201ccynical, hypocritical and mendacious,\u201d reiterated that these measures are international crimes that violate the Charter of the United Nations and International Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Cuban foreign minister also warned that Washington could try to use a humanitarian crisis as a pretext for more dangerous actions, including military aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
