Numerous prominent figures from various sectors in Spain have released a Manifesto for Cuba and against the threat of military aggression by the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Jos\u00e9 Manzaneda, coordinator of Cubainformaci\u00f3n, in a statement sent to Prensa Latina, more than 120 members of Spanish universities, two former rectors, and scientific personnel from the CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) are mobilizing against military intimidation of Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Faced with the growing threats of military intervention from the Donald Trump administration, and the statements made by his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, numerous sectors in Spain are aligning themselves with the Caribbean island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In response to the deployment of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier to the Caribbean and the recent indictment of former president Ra\u00fal Castro, 122 representatives of faculty and research teams from various Spanish universities and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) published the Manifesto \u201cNo to Military Aggression Against Cuba.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The initiative also includes two former university rectors, more than 30 professors, and some 20 members of the CSIC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The text, available at https:\/\/sites.google.com\/usal.es\/noagresionacuba, denounces that \u201cthe threat of military intervention by the world\u2019s greatest power against a small island would not only have incalculable consequences for regional peace and stability, but also constitutes an international crime in its very formulation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They directly point to the recent pronouncements by Trump and Rubio, who label Cuba a \u201cthreat to national security,\u201d as well as the deployment of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier to the Caribbean and the accusation against the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Ra\u00fal Castro, for alleged events that occurred 30 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The signatories demand an immediate end to the threats, the lifting of the economic blockade, and full respect for Cuba\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the first signatories are anthropologist and ecofeminist leader Yayo Herrero; former university rectors Carlos Berzosa (Complutense University of Madrid) and Josep Ferrer Llop (Polytechnic University of Catalonia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also signing are former Madrid city councilor and emeritus professor of Philosophy Montserrat Galcer\u00e1n; CSIC scientists Antonio Turiel and Fernando Valladares; professor and member of parliament Francisco Sierra; and economists Eduardo Garz\u00f3n and Carlos S\u00e1nchez Mato. and the philosophers Jorge Riechmann, Carlos Fern\u00e1ndez Liria, and Jos\u00e9 Antonio P\u00e9rez Tapias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want to make it clear that there is a critical and pluralistic voice in Spanish universities that opposes any aggression and defends dialogue and respect for international law,\u201d said Jos\u00e9 Sarri\u00f3n, professor at the University of Salamanca and coordinator of the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
