The Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations in New York, together with the Special Rapporteur on the right to development, Surya Deva, organized the official side event of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development this past week, co-sponsored by Vietnam and Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs website Cubaminrex, the initiative brought together government representatives, experts from the United Nations system, and civil society organizations to analyze how the right to development can catalyze inclusive global partnerships and accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The President of the Economic and Social Council, Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa, inaugurated the meeting and emphasized the need to revitalize international cooperation in the face of the challenges faced by developing countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the discussion, the panelists agreed that the right to development is an essential instrument for promoting a more just and equitable international order, based on strengthening multilateralism, cooperation, and rejecting unilateral coercive measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Representing Cuba, Ambassador Ernesto Sober\u00f3n Guzm\u00e1n stated that profound inequalities and unilateral practices persist, restricting the development opportunities of countries in the Global South, despite progress in recognizing the right to development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sober\u00f3n reiterated that international alliances must be based on solidarity, sovereign equality, and respect for international law and the Charter of the United Nations, free from political conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The diplomat denounced unilateral coercive measures as one of the greatest obstacles to the effective exercise of the right to development and recalled that Cuba continues to be a victim of the longest-running and most extensive system imposed on any country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also reaffirmed Cuba\u2019s commitment to promoting the right to development and expressed hope that the high-level meeting of the General Assembly scheduled for September 23 would contribute to progress toward a legally binding International Covenant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speeches from Vietnam, Special Rapporteur Surya Deva, and representatives of civil society highlighted the need to strengthen international cooperation as an essential requirement for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The celebration of the event demonstrated international support for the initiatives promoted by Cuba in defense of the right to development and confirmed the recognition of the country\u2019s active role in promoting multilateralism and international cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
