{"id":12265,"date":"2026-07-28T20:09:34","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T00:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/?p=12265"},"modified":"2026-07-28T20:09:37","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T00:09:37","slug":"brazil-challenges-u-s-tariffs-at-world-trade-organization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/brazil-challenges-u-s-tariffs-at-world-trade-organization-28072026\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil Challenges U.S. Tariffs at World Trade Organization"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday, Brazil submitted a \u201cRequest for Consultations\u201d to the World Trade Organization (WTO) with the United States over the new 25% and 12.5% tariffs that President Donald Trump imposed on Brazilian imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>RELATED:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesurenglish.net\/polymarket-gives-lula-strong-lead-in-brazils-2026-presidential-race\/\">Polymarket Gives Lula Strong Lead in Brazil\u2019s 2026 Presidential Race<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Brazilian Foreign Affairs Ministry said the measures are \u201cunjustified and incompatible\u201d with the obligations assumed by the United States before the WTO and argued that they violate both the 1994 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the rules governing the organization\u2019s dispute settlement mechanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two weeks ago, Washington announced an additional 25% tariff on some Brazilian exports as a sanction against the country for alleged \u201cunfair\u201d trade practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure took effect on July 22. One day later, Trump announced another 12.5% tariff, applied to Brazil and other countries, alleging \u201cinsufficient efforts to combat forced labor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The request for consultations constitutes the first stage of the WTO dispute settlement mechanism and precedes a possible request for the establishment of a panel to examine the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the first measure taken by Brazilian President Lula da Silva following the imposition of the new U.S. tariffs.
