Top House Democrat Launches Investigation Into FIFA\u2019s Ties to Trump<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cIn just 18 months, the Trump family has made more than US$4 billion by exploiting the influence of the presidency,\u201d he alleged, lamenting that \u201cthe same corrupt practices Trump is using to pocket billions of dollars are also causing Americans to pay, on average, an additional US$3,100 a year because of the rising cost of living.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For that reason, he introduced the legislation with two goals: First, to give Americans their money back. Second, to make sure no one can ever steal from them again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cJust because Trump stole Americans\u2019 money doesn\u2019t mean it belongs to him. Americans deserve to get that money back,\u201d Schumer pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy bill will create a private right of action that will allow Americans to recover the money that Trump and his family have taken from them,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOur bill would empower anyone, including a state attorney general acting on behalf of the people of that state, to file a lawsuit to recover money stolen from the public through government corruption,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond returning money to Americans, the Democrat explained that his bill seeks to establish \u201cthe necessary safeguards to ensure that no president, this one or any other, can ever again turn public office into a private fortune.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The office will have the authority to issue subpoenas, \u201cgiving it real investigative power, effective enforcement authority, and the ability to recover profits obtained unlawfully.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The oversight body will be led by seven members \u2014 three Republicans, three Democrats and one independent \u2014 and Congress will not be able to cut its funding because the proposal establishes \u201ca self-sustaining funding source similar to that of the Federal Reserve,\u201d Schumer concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
