More than 150 Chileans are traveling to Cuba to participate in the commemorative program for the centennial of the birth of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is a large and diverse group comprised of members of the Solidarity Movement, the Communist Party, various collectives such as Siboney and the Chilean-Cuban Institute, graduates of the Latin American School of Medicine, the Popular Propaganda Brigade, and women\u2019s organizations, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gladys Acosta explained to Prensa Latina that the Gladys Mar\u00edn Internationalist Brigade, which she leads, is made up of 82 people, mostly communist activists, but also members of other organizations and parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are carrying suitcases filled with medicine, supplies, and even an ultrasound machine, thanks to aid collected through various campaigns held in communities throughout Chile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The group will deliver the donation to the Salvador Allende Hospital in Havana and the Celia S\u00e1nchez Manduley Hospital in Manzanillo, in the eastern province of Granma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other groups will also deliver supplies to the Miguel Enr\u00edquez and William Soler Hospitals in Havana, as well as school supplies and food to educational institutions and kindergartens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe believe that solidarity is the most important thing. We are going to thank them for what Cuba has done for the people of the world, for Latin America, and for Chile in particular,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Acosta recalled Cuba\u2019s support for the country during the Popular Unity government, when they sent tons of sugar, and also mentioned the hundreds of doctors trained at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The medical brigade members will carry out a comprehensive program that includes visits to centers of economic, historical, cultural and social interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the centennial activities are the International Colloquium \u201cFidel: Legacy and Future,\u201d at the Havana Convention Center, and tours of places linked to his life and work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFidel\u2019s thinking, his struggle for peace, for the sovereignty of peoples, and the battle of ideas he championed are more relevant today than ever,\u201d Acosta noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
