The Cuban ambassador to Uruguay, Lissett P\u00e9rez, expressed her gratitude for the solidarity shown by the Uruguayan people and the tributes paid in Montevideo and other cities to the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During a discussion held in La Paz, Canelones Department, organized by the solidarity movement with the Caribbean island, the diplomat said: \u201cToday we speak of Fidel, the Commander who turns 100 and whose image, gigantic and defiant, covered entire squares and avenues in Montevideo, Paysand\u00fa, Salto, and throughout Uruguay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She noted that the repeated image of Fidel Castro in the streets of Uruguay has a history of brotherhood between the two countries and \u201ca sacred name: Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The National Hero who represented Uruguay as consul because he knew he was a son of America and owed his allegiance to it, and thus left his fiery words in the newsrooms and sowed the seeds of Latin American unity that today, more than ever, calls upon us, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was Mart\u00ed who foresaw the imperial ambition to expand over our lands in America, P\u00e9rez emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She evoked the Uruguayans who participated in the war for the island\u2019s independence, and those who stood by them through the most difficult moments of the beginning of the revolution in their country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ambassador mentioned the achievements and transformations of the Cuban revolutionary process, despite the fact that \u201cfrom day one, the United States deployed its arsenal of evil against us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lissett P\u00e9rez referred to the \u201ceconomic, genocidal, and criminal blockade, which has been suffocating our economy for more than six decades.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also recalled the mercenary invasion of Playa Gir\u00f3n, \u201cthe biological warfare, which many keep silent about but which is living history: the dengue hemorrhagic fever virus, African swine fever, rice blast, all deliberately introduced to sow chaos and hunger,\u201d the diplomat explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were also terrorist attacks, such as the downing of the Cubana de Aviaci\u00f3n plane in Barbados, where 73 innocent people were murdered, the Cuban ambassador continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lissett P\u00e9rez emphasized that Cuba faces financial strangulation that prevents it from buying fuel and medicine, banking persecution that stifles remittances and trade, and \u201cthe most ferocious media war we have ever known, with fake news, smear campaigns, and algorithms that spread hatred and despair in an attempt to break us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event featured speeches by Dr. Ad\u00e1n Gonz\u00e1lez, a graduate of the Latin American School of Medicine, and Congressman Daniel Diverio of the Broad Front, as well as local authorities and other participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
H\u00e9ctor Numa Moraes, an emblematic voice of Uruguayan socially conscious music, closed the forum with his guitar playing. The forum also served as a platform for receiving supplies and medicines as part of a solidarity campaign for the besieged Caribbean archipelago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
