{"id":12722,"date":"2026-08-24T11:57:52","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T15:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/?p=12722"},"modified":"2026-08-24T11:57:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T15:57:54","slug":"u-s-military-expansion-in-latam-is-an-escalation-of-imperialism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/u-s-military-expansion-in-latam-is-an-escalation-of-imperialism-24082026\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Military Expansion in LATAM is an Escalation of Imperialism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with Xinhua published on Monday, Jose Luiz Niemeyer, an international relations professor at the Brazilian Institute of Capital Markets (IBMEC) university, pointed out that Washington\u2019s recent expansion of ground military operations in Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras and other countries represents an \u201cescalation of imperialism\u201d in Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>RELATED:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesurenglish.net\/u-s-sanctions-against-cuba-is-committing-genocide-diaz-canel\/\">U.S. Sanctions Against Cuba Are Committing Genocide: Diaz-Canel<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Noting that U.S. War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the expansion earlier this month during his visit to Panama, he said the move marks a qualitative leap in Washington\u2019s interventionist policy, extending to ground operations the same approach it has used to strike boats in the Caribbean and Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is an extremely concerning move and, unfortunately, is in keeping with the U.S. historical approach to our region,\u201d Niemeyer pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States is using the fight against drug trafficking not only to justify expanding its military presence, but also to impose \u201cits security agenda without any regard for the sovereignty of Latin American countries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe attacks on vessels in the Caribbean and the Pacific were already a unilateral action with serious human rights violations, resulting in more than 200 deaths and little presented evidence. Now, by applying that same logic to ground operations in countries like Colombia, Ecuador and Guatemala, the United States is creating a highly dangerous precedent for direct interventions in our territory,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Niemeyer questioned Washington\u2019s narrative about striking agreements with allied countries, saying they ignore popular will and national laws. \u201cWhat we are seeing is pressure from Washington on governments that are mostly ideologically aligned or in a position of political and economic vulnerability,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the Monroe Doctrine to the Roosevelt Corollary to the recent \u201cDonroe Doctrine,\u201d Latin American countries \u201care faced with the same logic of domination that reinvents itself throughout the centuries,\u201d Niemeyer said, describing the latter two as extension and revival of the Monroe Doctrine as Washington\u2019s guiding policy for the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By reviving that rhetoric with a play on the name of U.S. President Donald Trump, Washington \u201cis saying out loud that the United States feels entitled to intervene wherever it wants in the region to \u2018defend its hemisphere,&#8217;\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat concerns me is that this rhetoric is being accompanied by concrete actions, with training, intelligence gathering and joint operations,\u201d he said. \u201cIn the long term, this creates a military dependency that makes us hostages to Washington\u2019s volatile and aggressive foreign policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recalling the history of U.S. military intervention in the region, which is \u201cfull of troubling examples,\u201d the expert urged Latin American countries to stay alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe history of our region is full of examples of what happens when the United States decides to \u2018help\u2019 us with its armed forces: dictatorships, human rights violations, dirty wars and stunted development.
