Mexican President Sheinbaum Highlights Economic Gains in 20-Month Report<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nSuch practices seek to weaken \u201cindependent governments that defend sovereignty,\u201d she responded when asked whether U.S. praise for Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch conceals an intention to position him favorably for future electoral contests in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Aug. 18, the director of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Terrance Cole, described Garcia Harfuch as a \u201ctrusted partner\u201d and \u201ca good friend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His statements came during an international drug conference in Buenos Aires and amid bilateral friction over the revocation of U.S. visas for various Mexican governors and officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey think they will generate division by speaking well of some and badly of others. But they fail at that because there is a lot of coordination and patriotism among everyone in defending Mexico,\u201d Sheinbaum emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also attributed the attempts at interference to the U.S. political process ahead of the midterm elections, because \u201cin Washington, they often use Mexico as part of their election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs we have said, let them take care of the affairs over there. We will take care of our affairs here and coordinate with them,\u201d Sheinbaum said, acknowledging that the relationship with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has been complex because of trade disputes and differences over security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe must act with reason and principles, not with our stomach or our heart, because we must remain composed in those moments,\u201d she said, and assured that U.S. authorities have understood Mexico\u2019s interest in preserving its sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Wednesday, Presidential legal adviser Luisa Maria Alcalde recalled the recent reforms approved to protect national sovereignty against external interference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBroadcasting political propaganda from foreign governments on radio and television was prohibited, and foreign intervention was prohibited by establishing the annulment of elections if interference is proven,\u201d she pointed out at Sheinbaum\u2019s press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
