Nicaragua Sends Its Condolences to China Following the Flash Floods<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIn response to a media inquiry about Nicaragua\u2019s constitutional reforms, Guo said his country advocates respect for every nation\u2019s right to pursue a development path tailored to its conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cChina stands ready to foster friendly ties with all countries, including Nicaragua, based on mutual respect and win-win outcomes,\u201d the Chinese diplomat said, as reported by Global Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Diplomatic relations between China and Nicaragua were restored in December 2021, after an interruption of more than three decades. Since then the two countries have expanded bilateral cooperation in various areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the economic sphere, the largest volumes of Nicaraguan exports to the Chinese market currently consist of sugar, beef, coffee, sea cucumber, shrimp, and other seafood products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nicaragua Reaffirms Its Sovereignty and Security<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nPreviously, on Sept. 2, Nicaragua\u2019s National Assembly approved on first reading constitutional reforms that extend the presidential term to seven years and exclude \u201ctraitors to the homeland\u201d from participating in elections. More specifically, the amendments establish that the following types of actors may not join any political organization, may not run for elected office and may not hold public office:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 Those who lead or have led, financed, directly or indirectly participated in, or had any type of involvement with the planning, preparation or execution of an attempted coup or a coup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 Those who commit or have committed acts that undermine Nicaragua\u2019s independence, sovereignty, self-determination, security and peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 Those who promote foreign interference, call for military intervention or organize themselves with financing from abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 Those who propose, manage or support economic, commercial or financial blockades and sanctions against the State of Nicaragua, its institutions and its citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2014 Those who violate or have violated the fundamental principles established in the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The constitutional reform also establishes that the term for elected positions will be seven years. This will apply to the co-presidents of the republic, lawmakers, judicial and electoral magistrates, the attorney general, the superintendent of banks, and the heads of the Army and Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
