{"id":13092,"date":"2026-09-15T14:04:56","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T18:04:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/?p=13092"},"modified":"2026-09-15T14:04:58","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T18:04:58","slug":"norwegian-company-investigated-over-collaboration-in-myanmar-human-rights-abuses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/norwegian-company-investigated-over-collaboration-in-myanmar-human-rights-abuses-15092026\/","title":{"rendered":"Norwegian Company Investigated Over Collaboration in Myanmar Human Rights Abuses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, Norway\u2019s Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office opened an investigation into Telenor, the Nordic country\u2019s leading telephone operator, for alleged collaboration in crimes against human rights in Myanmar through its former subsidiary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>RELATED:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesurenglish.net\/myanmar-red-cross-confirms-authenticity-of-new-photos-of-aung-san-suu-kyi\/\">Myanmar Red Cross Confirms Authenticity of New Photos of Aung San Suu Kyi<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation covers the period from Feb. 1, 2021, when a military coup took place that resulted in thousands of deaths and imprisonments, through March 2022, when Telenor completed the sale of its subsidiary Telenor Myanmar (TML).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe reason for the charge is that on repeated occasions during that period, TML provided information on its customers\u2019 data traffic history to the military regime, while the regime was carrying out widespread attacks against part of the civilian population,\u201d Norwegian authorities stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) has opened another investigation into Telenor for violating the sanctions law on Myanmar, as the sale of TML included surveillance equipment without authorization from Norway\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">oth investigations concern the same period and the development of events. Therefore, both the PST and the Prosecutor\u2019s Office\u2019s economic crimes unit (Kripos) are cooperating on the case and jointly searched Telenor\u2019s offices on Tuesday, with authorization from an Oslo court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Telenor, in which the Norwegian state is the largest shareholder with 54% of the shares, had previously said it had no choice but to provide the data to Myanmar authorities in order to preserve the safety of its employees in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth cases are related to the consortium\u2019s former activities in Myanmar.
