Ernesto Sober\u00f3n Guzm\u00e1n, Cuba\u2019s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reaffirmed his country\u2019s commitment to decolonization and the right of peoples to self-determination this Thursday before the General Assembly\u2019s Fourth Committee in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The diplomat \u2014 as noted by the Cuban Mission to the UN via its Facebook profile \u2014 pointed out that, more than six decades after the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, colonialism persists as a practice contrary to the UN Charter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that this form of domination limits economic and social development, affects identity, and violates the sovereignty of peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sober\u00f3n warned of contemporary manifestations of domination, such as the exploitation of natural resources, the extraterritorial application of national laws, and unilateral coercive measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this context, he denounced the economic, commercial, and financial blockade\u2014aggravated by an energy embargo\u2014imposed by the United States against Cuba, alongside other measures aimed at pressuring the people and undermining national independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ambassador reiterated Cuba\u2019s solidarity with Puerto Rico, Palestine, and Western Sahara, while underscoring the need to keep decolonization a priority on the UN agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He highlighted the proclamation of December 14 as the International Day Against Colonialism, an initiative that helps raise awareness and give visibility to the organization\u2019s efforts to eradicate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In closing, Ernesto Sober\u00f3n called for intensified collective efforts to put a definitive end to colonialism and reaffirmed that Cuba will continue to defend sovereignty and the right of peoples to decide their own future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
