{"id":3340,"date":"2023-10-05T21:52:46","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T01:52:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/?p=3340"},"modified":"2023-10-05T21:52:58","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T01:52:58","slug":"eu-member-states-reach-deal-on-migration-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/eu-member-states-reach-deal-on-migration-policy-05102023\/","title":{"rendered":"EU member states reach deal on migration policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>European Union states have agreed on a series of new procedures to handle irregular immigration during times of high arrivals, removing a key obstacle to a larger agreement on the bloc\u2019s asylum and migration rules by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from the EU\u2019s 27 members reached a deal on Wednesday covering \u201ccrisis regulation\u201d, allowing further negotiations to move forward and a push to make the changes legally binding before next year\u2019s EU elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow we can move on with the negotiations,\u201d Swedish Migration Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said. \u201cIt is important to get the pact in place, to ensure order at the EU\u2019s external borders and reduce flows.\u201d &nbsp;The bloc hopes to make those changes into law before the next round of EU elections ushers in an expected shift to the right as support grows across the continent for political parties that have railed against immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement was struck after a dispute between Germany and Italy focused on charities that rescue refugees from drowning at sea. &nbsp;\u201cWe need the pact done and dusted before Europeans go out to vote,\u201d said European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas, who called Wednesday\u2019s deal the \u201cmissing link\u201d in a package on migration and asylum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands of refugees, many of them fleeing war, conflict and economic hardship, have died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, a testament to the high price of Europe\u2019s already restrictive approach to immigration that has come under fire from human rights groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But right-wing parties in countries such as Italy, Hungary, Poland and Germany have made immigration central to their policies, railing against the asylum system and calling for greater restrictions. &nbsp; Hungary and Poland are poised to take turns holding the EU presidency after the next elections, and both opposed Wednesday\u2019s deal.
