Mexican President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador has paused relations with the U.S. and Canadian embassies after the two countries criticized Mexico\u2019s efforts to reform its judiciary system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Part of the reform calls for judges to be elected by popular vote. Mexico\u2019s President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, who will take office on October 1st, has defended the proposed changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar criticized Mexico\u2019s judicial reform proposal, saying that \u201cpopular direct election of judges is a major risk to the functioning of Mexico\u2019s democracy.\u201d
