{"id":6760,"date":"2024-11-18T18:07:49","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T22:07:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/?p=6760"},"modified":"2024-11-18T18:07:51","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T22:07:51","slug":"i-will-not-be-silent-australia-censures-senator-for-king-charles-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiorebelde.cu\/english\/i-will-not-be-silent-australia-censures-senator-for-king-charles-protest-18112024\/","title":{"rendered":"I will not be silent: Australia censures senator for King Charles protest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Australia\u2019s Senate has voted to censure Indigenous lawmaker Lidia Thorpe after she heckled Britain\u2019s King Charles III during his visit to parliament last month. &nbsp;The vote, led by Australia\u2019s governing Labor Party, was passed with 46 votes in favour and six against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lidia Thorpe, a Gunnai, Gunditjmara and Djab-Wurrung woman who represents the state of Victoria, released a statement before the vote, saying she would not be silenced by the measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senate does not have the power to appoint or remove senators, and censure motions, though politically symbolic, do not carry legal weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will not be silent.
